About Me Page
Trying to build a writing business
My previous about me page gave a brief overview of how I started on Medium. I stumbled on this site. My objective was to promote my KDP Amazon workbooks and my TpT storefront. However, all that changed when I started writing on Medium. I’m now building a writing business while keeping my teaching job.
I want to continue my About Me page by telling you a little about my journey and how I came to write on Medium.
I have an identical twin brother who currently lives with me. The only time we were apart was during the years from age 18–30 years old. It was about when I attended college and worked as an actuary in insurance before becoming a teacher.
My About Me page wouldn’t be complete if I didn’t talk about my identical twin brother. My twin doesn’t have a 4-year degree, but he has two associate’s degrees. His jobs have always been in the hotel and restaurant industry.
He worked as a waiter, bus help, store clerk, clerk, and accountant and held many other temporary jobs through a temporary agency. He was even an usher at the football stadium for weekend college football games. It was the ushering job at the football stadium that led me to work at the stadium as well. I wanted to watch college football for free also.
I’m more into studying in school, but we both like reading books. However, even though I have an advanced degree, and my twin brother doesn’t, he has skills that I don’t. He built a desktop computer and a flying model airplane and is pretty good at coding and handy with computers.
I’m okay if I can work around word documents, spreadsheets, and any end-user software. My twin brother understands the inner workings of a computer.
The biggest test with my relationship with my identical twin brother
My biggest test came several years ago when I finally found a girlfriend after many years of being single. Everything was fine. My brother was living with me, but he was paying me rent. I wanted him to feel a sense of responsibility and teach him to survive should my living arrangements change.
Everything was fine until he lost his job several months before the start of the pandemic. He was hired back and lost it again. At the same time, my girlfriend wanted to live together and wanted my twin brother out of my house. He had nowhere to go.
My girlfriend said one day, “you have until June 22nd to tell your brother to leave, or I’m leaving.” It took several weeks before we finally broke up. But, it was tense between my twin and me.
He was my best friend growing up. We grew up in a small town in the countryside of Kauai. We did everything together.
June 22nd came and went, but my girlfriend wanted to make it work, but our fights became more frequent. She finally made her final ultimatum.
I did a lot of praying, remembering my last year of college. My twin helped my mom and me by paying my college tuition and part of my expenses during my last year of college.
Somewhere along the way, my brother had difficulty coping with his depression, and he eventually couldn’t keep a steady job.
My girlfriend called me and said, “I want a decision; it’s your twin brother or me.” She had a college-aged daughter, so I understand she was thinking about her too.
By then, I was so sick of the fights, and I couldn’t shake the feeling of what my twin brother did when I needed financial support.
My last word to my girlfriend when she made her last ultimatum was, “goodbye.”
The next day I changed my cell phone number and never looked back.
I plan to keep teaching and move back home to Kauai.
